Eddy Current Tensioning Clutches

Tensioning Clutches are a simple way to provide controlled tension during a wind-up operation. As the diameter of a wind-up spool increases, the Tensioning Clutch provides torque to offset the decrease in the spool RPM.

Features:

  • Mechanically assembled and field repairable
  • Permanent magnet technology requires no power and has no wear parts
  • Custom designs for unique applications
  • Graduated adjustments for repeatable and recordable settings

Benefits:

  • Low maintenance cost
  • Economical solution
  • Reduced setup time

Applications:

Tensioning Clutches typically are used for spooling or winding very fine wire, plastic film, tapes or textiles.

  • Wind-up operations for very fine wire, plastic film, tapes or textiles

The Eddy Current devices use twin magnet disks, but maximum torque position is opposite of a Hysteresis disk. Magnetic field strength is high when “unlike” poles are on opposite sides of the disk. Conversely, magnetic field strength is low when similar poles are opposite.
Eddy currents (torque) produced are proportional to slip speed.
